The first half of the 2022/23 Bundesliga season is over. W: For Borussia Mönchengladbach, the first half ended with nothing but satisfactory results.

Therefore, it is not surprising that Lothar Matthaus (61), world champion and even a former player in the Football League, is very worried about his former club, as he revealed in an interview with “Sky”.
Gladbach finished the first half of the season with a convincing result
The first half of the Bundesliga season is over. The record: Borussia Mönchengladbach are ninth in the table after 17 matches, with 22 points – that’s good so far.
However, a closer look at the stats shows just how dramatic the fillies really are. The VfL have lost five of their last seven matches – including the first two of the new year and thus the last two matches of the first round, against Leverkusen (2:3) and in Augsburg (0:1). Only FC Schalke, bottom of the standings with just nine points, suffered more defeats during this period.
Moreover: Borussia have not kept a clean sheet in ten Bundesliga matches nor won away from home in the entire first half of the season. In general, a balance that should not necessarily cause enthusiasm between Fohlen’s fans and the leaders of Borussia.
In contrast, coach Daniel Farke was upset. Farke admitted the mood was “somewhat upset” after the 1-0 defeat by FC Augsburg on Wednesday night (25 January).

“We are where we want to be and what is realistic for us,” Farke said, referring among other things to the club’s limited finances. Defender Ko Itakura (25), on loan from Manchester City to FC Schalke 04, was Borussia’s hottest summer transfer.
In addition, the club had to allow goalkeeper Jan Sommer (34) to move to Bayern a few days ago. The Gladpackers are ninth in the table with 22 points after the first half of the season. “We are solid,” summed up the 46-year-old coach.
Football expert Lothar Matthaus, himself a former Borussia Mönchengladbach player, sees things differently. As the 61-year-old revealed in an interview with Sky, he finds the current situation in Gladbach very worrying.
When asked about the current state of the Colts, he came to the following conclusion: “Mönchengladbachers are a gray mouse. They have lost their last two matches. Of course, as a former Gladbach player, you imagine everything a little differently than in your former club.
You can tell opponents are now adapting to VfL style of play, the former world footballer confirmed. The defeat in Augsburg is also good, Matthaus said, because the Fogerstadt team did a lot, especially in the second half.
For this reason, Matthaus finds it difficult to imagine that the people of the Lower Rhine are satisfied with the present state of affairs. “Where they are now, with 22 points in midfield, that can’t be Borussia Monchengladbach’s claim – not even from the players or the coach,” he clearly doubted.
That’s why the former Gladbach player warns: “And that’s why it’s important to get back on track – like at Werder Bremen. Otherwise, the pointer will point more down than up and the Gladbachers won’t like it, nor does any other team.”
Matthew is certainly not wrong in his observations. Borussia better score again as soon as possible in the second half of the season in order to at least defend their one-digit place in the table and maybe be able to dream about the European Cup again.
